The regime in Tehran, as well as some clerics, have denounced ISIS in general. However, no grand ayatollah, or even “little” ayatollah, from Mashad or Qom, Iran’s two most prominent centers for religious learning, has condemned the killing from a religious perspective. Compare that to Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's most prestigious center of learning, which has not only condemned the killing, but has also called for the “killing, crucifixion and chopping of the limbs of Islamic State terrorists.” Even Saudi Arabia, with all its hypocrisy, condemned ISIS and the misguided ideology behind the Kasasbeh killing.
The reason I am particularly incensed is that Iranian mullahs tend to have a “matter-of-fact” opinion about every little detail in the lives of Iranians, be it music, personal relationships, or even one’s native language. Yet, when faced with real world problems, the source of which can be partially traced back to religion (and partially to psychopathy), problems that are technically in a mullah’s “field of study,” they are silent. Not a word. Not a condemnation.
