In his speech today, Mr. Khamenei rejected all of Rouhani’s assertions about the proper role of the Guardian Council, the upcoming elections, and the role of majlis in the nuclear agreement. He also sided with the Guardian Council and expressly stated that the Council is correct to vet and disqualify potential presidential, parliamentary, and Assembly of Experts candidates.
The ball is now in Rouhani’s court. Will he discuss these disagreements with the Iranian people and resign from the presidency? Will he retreat in a similar fashion to former president Khatami? Or will he act like Ahmadinejad, ignore the Supreme Leader, and do what he pleases? Only time will tell.
